The installation aims to transform knowledge into a sensory experience, inviting visitors to engage directly with the ideas and intuitions that made Frederick II a central figure of early modernity. Through the integration of text, image, and sound, the narrative assumes an immersive and contemplative form, where every visual element conveys a thought and every sound fragment evokes a symbolic dimension of power.
Methodological Approach
The work is grounded in a dual line of research: historical and visual. Historical and iconographic research, based on primary sources such as the Liber Augustalis, contemporary miniatures, and Frederick’s documents, enabled the construction of a narrative consistent with the cultural reality of the 13th century. In parallel, visual and technological research translated these contents into contemporary audiovisual language through high-definition video, 3D animation, AI-based image processing, and textures inspired by medieval illumination. This process produced a hybrid language, suspended between documentation and imagination, where technology becomes a poetic tool for historical inquiry.
Narrative Structure
The installation is divided into eight chapters, each representing a conceptual and perceptive step in the experience. The Genealogy of Knowledge recounts Frederick’s origins and the formation of a universal mind. The Construction of the Universal explores the court of Palermo as a cradle of cultural dialogue. These insights are presented bilingually, in Italian and English, to ensure international accessibility and reinforce the project’s universal vocation. This structure balances suggestion and information, inviting visitors on a journey that evolves from aesthetic intuition to conscious reflection.
Technical and Artistic Solutions
The installation employs a video-projection system and multichannel audio setup that envelop the viewer in a fully immersive environment. The imagery, pictorial and symbolic in character, alternates between abstraction and reconstructions inspired by 13th-century iconography. The color palette, dominated by gold, lapis lazuli, and natural pigments, recalls medieval miniature traditions reinterpreted through contemporary sensibilities. Editing and direction follow a ritual and contemplative rhythm designed to stimulate not only vision but also inner reflection.
